Stoking the flame...

Hi! My name is Beth Horihan, and I'm a senior anticipating graduation on May 24th, 2014, from Loras College in Dubuque, IA. I am pursuing a major in Elementary Education K-6 with endorsements in Early Childhood with Special Education, Strategist I K-8, and Reading K-8!
I have had so many opportunities here at Loras that have helped shape my adventure. Among my experiences are being a Resident Advisor for the last year and a half, being Vice President of Loras Students for Inclusive Experiences my junior year, being a member of the Loras Honors Program, taking part in Loras Choirs and liturgical music, and one of my personal favorites going on and leading service trips over school breaks. I even had the opportunity to volunteer for a week in an elementary school in Morton, Mississippi, a low income city about 30 minutes from Jackson where many students do not complete high school.
Throughout the past year I have been given the opportunity to work and teach in a variety of settings. In the fall I completed a clinical teaching placement in 5th grade at St. Columbkille Elementary as well as 50 hours of work with children birth through age 4 years old in an inclusive childcare and preschool setting at Hills and Dales in Dubuque, IA. For student teaching, I have completed a 9 week placement with Early ACCESS doing home interventions with children with or at risk for developing disabilities. Additionally, I am currently completing my final 9 weeks of student teaching with a 3rd grade class at Kennedy Elementary School in Dubuque, IA.

Kindling the spark...

My family has been my greatest support in my journey thus far. While a large portion of my extended family lives in various cities and towns throughout Iowa, I was raised in Rockford, IL. I am the oldest of three children, my younger brother is a sophomore at Clarke University and my sister is a senior in high school.
Throughout my life my parents have instilled me a love of learning and of helping others learn. Through volunteering in different classrooms at my grade school, to running classrooms at my church's vacation bible school, and participating in various other service opportunities working with children, I was led to consider a vocation in education.

An ever burning flame...
Through my work as a teacher I hope to be able to help the children in my classroom develop a spark for learning. I know from personal experience that its not always easy to maintain this desire to continually learn, but with the right supports everyone can develop their own unique spark. I hope to create sparks for learning as varied, wonderful, and bright as the differing abilities of each of my students.
